- Used to help reduce chronic muscle tension and pain
- Acts as a kind of sixth sense allowing patients to "see" or "hear" muscle tension
- Helps patients be aware of their muscle tension and learn to relax
This therapeutic tool is used primarily for "kick starting" weak and atrophied muscles sometimes seen following surgery or prolonged periods of bed rest, or conversely to help to relax overactive tense muscles often seen in the neck and upper back or around the Temporal Mandibular Joint (TMJ).
Biofeedback is a term used to describe many forms of feedback that you may receive from your body. In our Burnaby Physiotherapy Clinic, we utilize a specialized Biofeedback unit that monitors electrical impulses emitted by muscular activity. Increased muscle activity corresponds with increased electrical activity. The Biofeedback unit transmits a sound that increases in volume directly correlating to the intensity of the electrical current coming from the underlying musculatures.
Using this Biofeedback unit essentially allows the patient to listen to their muscle activity. The patient can learn to recognize the way tension subjectively feels by using the objective Biofeedback auditory signals and as a result learn to control the muscle activity.
By listening to the muscle activity, our Burnaby Physiotherapists aim to help teach the patient to either relax tense and overactive muscles or to reactivate and stimulate under active, weak or atrophied muscles.
